Bethanie Menden: Well you can be an investment marketing assistant. You do have to look (I wouldn't say stare) at a computer screen a lot but you're looking at price movements and draft research reports. Then you MUST alert key personnel in different departments (specifically, marketing and legal) if you see anything notewor! thy (as defined by the company). so you're on the phone A LOT.! You must know what issues to call about (when to pick up the phone and dial and when NOT to pick up the phone and dial. for example you never call about a stock split because stock splits are deemed unremarkable. every firm has its own rules) ... It's challenging because you have to know the trading floor lingo and legal lingo and 9 out of 10 times these nitwits mean to say the same crap but due to EGO, legal hates to hear marketing and trading floor vernacular (especially trading floor vernacular) and marketing hates legal lingo. so you must understand both lingos fluently and you must be the buffer peacekeeper because they hate each other as they're diametrically opposed. Like, they never wanted to talk to each other only if it was absolutely necessary. they preferred to communicate via middlemen like us. when they did talk to each other directly sparks would fly... that's how much they got on each other's nerves. lol. their hatred for each other helped with *our* jo! b security (the marketing assistants) ...... anyhue sometimes you have to call the equity teams if you anticipate that they're forgetting to follow the rules (which was every freeking day) and by doing so you are smoothing things out before they get muddled. i did this for 8 and a half years in nyc (wall street) but in a strange way I loved it because of the crazy fast environment (crazy fast in a good way) and i could do it with my eyes closed after 6 months. i also dig being a good communicator and making sure everyone's on the same page....Show more
