Which one is better to use, a car or motorcycle, in terms of maintenance cost and fuel consumption?

Ha Wolski: depends a lot on how far you are going and conditions.ie a long way on an open road in winter rain isnt pleasant but being able to scoot through a traffic jam is handy .a motor bike will be much cheaper to run and you will lose a lot less on resale but with the economic situation at the moment cars are getting cheap too.you can park a bike anywhere.fit more people in a car...Show more

Collin Barter: There are comparisons that go both ways. just as some cars are more expensive to maintain, so are there bikes that are expensive to maintain.Cars have the potential to be more expensive to own and opperate simply because there are cars with 300k pricetags. where motorcycles do not come with such heavy initial price tags.Ignoring the depreciation of value from operating vs initial purchase price, MOTORCYCLES are more expensive to operate and maintain.Motorcycle maintanence is more frequent, and often more involved than car maintanence, also parts for motorcycl! es are generally more expensive than parts for cars. -tires need to be replaced on motorcycles very frequently, every 7-15k miles depending on the bike, unlike cars there is a fair amount of labor involved in this and it adds to the cost of the process, My tires were recently replaced for 580 dollars-motors dont last as long as motors in cars, larger displacement motorcycle engines will generally last longer though so it woudl be better to buy a bigger bike.-Insurance is substancially less for motorcycles when you purchase only liability, however full coverage can often exceed that of a car due to the possiblility of a bike simply, "falling over" where as a car cannot.-You will be faster than every vehicle on the road if you buy a sport bike, this means, at a traffic light, you can ALWAYS get in front, and on highway merges, you dont have to look for somebody to let you in, instead you pick an opening and speed up to get into it.-You can often make your own parkign spot an! d not have to pay for parking.-Fuel consumption varies, but mo! st of the time, bikes will get better mileage, some supersport bikes will get less mileage than a car, and also require high octane fuel from the pump adding to cost. My bike gets only 28mpg highway, but it can do 0-100mph in 5.7 seconds where as a car cannot.-The fun factor is much larger on bikes than in a car, having the capability to lift your frint tire off the ground by opening throttle, and accelerate to speeds more than tripple the legal speed limit is very fun. Girls are also strnagely attracted to guys on motorcycles, nobody knows why, but you will definately meet more girls if you own a bike.As a net, i have found that cars are cheaper in general, if you cant afford both a car and a bike, you probibly shoudnt buy a bike. If you buy a fast bike, i recomend hunting down one of several models that come equipped with ABS, they are a little more expensive but it a good idea if you plan on using them for their ludicrous speed capabilities...Show more

Marhta Te! ahan: Only a couple names come to mind when commuting every day on a bike. Harley Davidson and BMW. German being slightly better technology wise. Problems with bike unless you live in San Diego or where the weather is great. You have to be prepaired for rain cold snow and slick wet roads. Automobiles eliminate the need for snowmobile suits helmet hair and rain gear and high outside temps just turn the A/C on. My mind wanders day dreaming on a bike during a 70 degree spring morning riding to work I drove past my exit. "what the heck " I will take the long way around and promptly missed the exit on the way back. I sold the bike shortly afterward....Show more
