If VC= IRV+ERV+TV, What does IRV=?

Marion Wieboldt: IRV= VC - ERV - TV.Simply transfer the ERV and TV to left hand side.

Jene Kostyla: This is not an algebraic equation. IRV is the total amount of air that can be forcibly inhaled after tidal volume inhalation. Vital capacity, by definition, is the total amount of exchangeable air. ERV is the amount of air that can be forcible exhaled after tidal volume exhalation. You cannot get rid of the ERV without exhaling the IRV first. Is TV in your equation tidal volume inhalation or tidal volume exhalation? IRV includes TV-inhalation.You can't exhale TV-exhalation if TV-inhalation is still in your lungs...This is like comparing apples and oranges....Show more
