Tereasa Sorensen: Jen you have been so helpful! I would love for you to email me. I also think it's exciting that you teach VBS! I am teaching 1-2 grade VBS in a couple weeks at our church. The preschool is established, but it is expanding through 2nd grade. The previous teacher will be teaching 1-2 combined, and there is a kindgarten teacher as well. I am taking on preschool, and we do want to stick to state standards as much as possible.

Fritz Hawkey: Wow. You have a lot to do. If you want to, I could e-mail you and we could chat so I could help you more. I have taught Preschool for 7 years, and was on! the Board of Directors for our church based Preschool for 6 years. I was on Church Council (leadership) for my church, and was a VBS director for 5 years. You are going to have a lot of questions not only now, but as you go along and get set up. Have you been given anything at all? Is this a new Preschool or are you a new teacher in an established Preschool? Is the room set up yet? Are there tables and chairs, books, bookshelves, art supplies? For starters, you need a curriculum. It would be good for you to purchase 2 curriculum books so you have them at your fingertips at home. They will cost about $40 each, but you will use them a lot. Another thing you REALLY need is Mailbox magazine. It would be good to get a subscription to this magazine, again so you have some resources handy. For now, go to your local library and check out a few copies of Mailbox magazine. Ask the librarian were the teacher resource materials are in the library. There will probably be! several soft cover books about teaching Preschoolers that you! can check out and bring home to look through. Here are a couple that are popular:The Complete Daily Curriculum for Early Childhood by Pam Schiller Creative Resources for the Early Childhood Classroom by Judy Herrand don't forget Mailbox magazine. If you are really going to do it right, you would teach the "standards". The standards are "Early Learning Content Standards" and they are a listing of what teachers are supposed to teach in the Preschool classroom. They vary by state, but each state has them. You can find them by going to the department of education for your state. My guess is that you are not going to be expected to teach the standards. If the Preschool expected that, they would have hired someone with a teaching degree. You can ask the Library if they have a copy of the standards for Preschool. Another thing to be aware of is called "The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale" by Thelma Harms. It lists all the things that a Preschool room should ha! ve in it such as space and furnishings, activities, program structure, etc. The Library might have this book. There are lots of teacher websites. One you might like is called "Preschool Express" by Jean Warren. It's a good starting place and has practical ideas. Jean Warren also has written some books. You could find them on Amazon. Also try-Discount School SupplyLakeshore Learning...Show more

Sharie Sommerville: Preschool is probably the most important learning age. This is the age where the alphabet, numbers, colors, size, patterns, and so much more consumes their mind and allows them to build cognitive thinking skills. I am teaching a preschool class right now at a Christian elementary school and have found some great online sites that provide tons and I mean tons of educational resources that are bible based and very interactive. Try these sites:www.totallytots.blogspot.comwww.confessionsofahomeschooler.blogspot.comwww.mama-jenn.blogspot.comI hope this hel! ped. Good Luck!...Show more

Dale Mccoun: you have a lot to do for! preschool... u can teach them by making use of cds for kids, arrange some water kingdom /pool for kids, make them play for sometime, some group activities, so that kids get along with each other....

Myron Leftwich: Preschool children need to learn to socialize more than they need to learn math. Also, if the child is allowed to follow his own interests, he'll learn much more quickly and with greater gusto than if he's stuck in a desk being forced to endlessly copy letters and numbers.
